Looking for a rolling bottom tool cab GVRD

Hey everyone


I'm starting a new job in a couple weeks and require a rolling cab
I'm looking for a bottom right now, but hey, who knows what combo someone may have with the right price ...
Looking for something that's 27w with 17d drawers
I need the bottom to be a 6 or 7 drawer unit with a minimum of 4 2" drawers, unless there's a top and bottom combo available, and the top has the required drawers
I can't use a 42" unit as I'll need to move it around the shop from job to job, and keep it out of everyone's way

Must have locks, ball-bearing slides and a decend load capacity
Not interested in 50lb drawers

If anyone knows where I can look for one of these, let me know.

I can't believe how little local stock there is nowadays
I remember being able to go in-store and look at/touch everything for sale
In cases such as this, I like to look at what I'm paying for before I open my wallet
Sears has decent prices, but shipping is 2 weeks out and I can just see it arriving damaged. Been there with them too many times
Home Depot is a little sooner, but the buggers want shipping fees, and still buying sight-unseen


I may have to bite the bullet and spend more than I wanted, but I have 2 weeks to keep looking in the meantime and can always work out of small boxes if I need to order something

If someone spots something used, please PM me as I don't have to buy new

I always believe in quality tools. all the cheap tools will always break when you need them the most.

Wait for the sale at Canadian tire. There warranty is Great. Prices are great.
Can't go wrong there..

They make a nice power cabinet with a wood top that goes on sale once and a while for 599..really nice box. I know lots of people with it, that actually us them.

That or Costco...

I have an 1800 mac box. That is worse quality then the 599 can tire box.

You don't get lifetime warranty on Mac or snapon boxes till you buy into the upper models..

Problem solved

After searching online for what feels like weeks, and looking at pretty much every kind of box there is out there

One example of my Craigslist experience is;

I drove from Central Burnaby to White Rock as a guy had a cab and box for sale for $100
I asked him if it has roller or friction slides. He tells me it's roller. I drive 45 mins and it's FRICTION slides :twised: I made him feel so guilty I got a Porter Cable Tiger Saw for $50 in a case, but I'm still miffed about it

So, after TOO much stressing about "am I going to find a box in time for my new job", I went to Sears tonight
Perfect time for tool pricing as the new catalog is out for next year

I bought a chest/cab combo that's made by SPG International
Positive closing roller slides, double-wall construction, 600lb chest and 1,600lb cab
Can't be happier for $520 before tax

Had to convince the manager to let me take the demo chest as shipping was too late for the new job

Only thing I don't like is how the casters are mounted
Stock is sheet screws. I'll add 1/4" bolts, nylocs and washers

Otherwise, no complaints
Solid build, nice slides for the money, sturdy solid composite casters, but no re-enforcement where it should
They claim 1,600 lbs, and I'll test it with all my work tools before the warranty runs out :wink:

For those who care;

I could have spent $400 @ Home Depot for a Husky set, and would have brought home a single-wall construction unit with pop-riveted ball-bearing slides made in China

I bought a made in Canada unit, from a company that even KMS sells
Some canuck and some off-shore parts, but still good build quality for the price

Except they've dropped all their useful boxes
Everything they have for sale now is either too expensive, and still is a waste of proper space, or the drawers are all too tall ... wasted space

Who needs a 3, or 4, or 5 inch drawer for screw drivers/wrenches/pliers ?

Nothing Canuck Tire has had for sale for over a year is utilising storage properly for anyone who has wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers etc
Years ago, they used to have proper drawer sizes, and you could fit in them wrench sets, plier sets, screwdriver sets, etc

Somebody has missed the whole idea of a toolbox in their current lineup

Sure, having big drawers is OK for anyone in their garage, but it doesn't work for someone using it in a work setting when you need to utilize your space as best as possible

Just an example
I can't afford to have a 5" tall drawer that is full of 2" of tools when I need to move that box around the shop
So why have that drawer at all ?

I agree with the comment about the husky boxes... I've umm... Had to do a bit of welding on it.... Apparently you can't store 1/2 plate in the bottom drawer
