I would say that chemi pure is the best and ive been told it will last up to 6months.

carbon usually lasts around 48 hrs that is the active stuff, now that is what i have read and heard.

But honesty i think if you have a huge bio load it's not going to be as good as a small bio load, i thought it's supposed to take out the smell and theyellowing in the water...

I personally run Kent Carbon 24/7, and I change it bi-monthly. Another good brand that I've heard is Black Diamond by Marineland I believe. Some people believe in using carbon and use it religously, and some people feel it is unnecessary. I find that it does remove the oder and will probably take out some of the chemicals that corals release as their defense mechanism.

So if I put some carbon in a bag in my sump will that be OK, or do you need to try and make the water flow directly through it?

I've read somewhere that carbon works best in canister type filters and stuff.

I run my carbon 24/7 in 2 hagen 802 powerhead filters. I change it every 3 or 4 days.

I run about 2 cups of carbon in a bag in the sump. I change it once a month.

Hello,

The fact that you are running a system without a skimmer and talking about water quality issues. You need a skimmer.

definatly get a skimmer, carbon needs water to be ran thru it in order for it to work. some make a little shelf under the drains in your sump but its wise to either use a filter sock on the drain or make another shelf just above the carbon shelve. clean it regularly. canister works as well but a pain to always take apart. BLACK DIAMOND is good and carbons longevity depends on water quality but lasts longer then 48hours. If you have lots of nice SPS becarefull not to burn them. when starting carbon it will make your water clear so reduce light by a few hours. just like acclimating a new coral. they will bleach if you don't. I've seen/read were people just start carbon and wonder why they get instant bleaching.

oh i have a skimmer its in the mail got a turbo floter :) But some people say u dont need a skimmer and some do. The main reason i want carbon is to keep the smell down cuz my tank is so new that the water isnt pretty
