NOVEMBER 2005

Rayyue's 120 Gallon Reef

I am very honoured to be the Featured Tank of The Month on Canreef. I was surprised to find that my tank was going to be featured. Enjoy!

System:

I have had this system set up for about 9 months now.  I bought a 120 gallon  tank as a Christmas present to myself in 2004.  The tank came complete with lights, live rocks, live sand, skimmer, return pump, and UV.  It was then that I started to set up this Christmas gift to me.

The tank is 48"x24"x24" 120 galon..with a CPR CS-102 overflow at the right hand corner. My sump and refugium is  48"x12"x18" (45 gallons). Equipment includes a  ASM G2 skimmer, Gen X Mak 4 for return.  I also have a Mag 7 on a Rainbow Lifeguard 25w UV system which also acts as a return.  For circulation I use a Tunze 6060.  I put it at the left back corner and blow it to right front corner.

Clams anyone?

Tank Chemistry:

Specific Gravity: 1.025   Alkalinity:  9 dkH    Calcium: 400 ppm   Nitrates:  15 ppm

Temperature: 79.9F  pH: 8.6 (light on) 8.4 (light off)

Because I drip  kalkwassser 24 hours a day,  the pH is higher than normal but my livestock seems ok and fully open, so I don't really care about that.

Lighting and Photoperiod:

My lighting system is single 400w 10000k metal halide and 2x110w VHO super actinic blue bulbs.  The actinics  are on 10 hours a day and MH are on 8 hours a day.

I get about 3 gallons per day of evaporation.  To combat this, I usually drip freshwater mixed with Kalkwasser all day and night. I put a 20gal tank beside my reef tank but behind my TV to mix and drip it.

The tank is heated with a 250W heater.  I have two 4 inch fans to assist in cooling the tank and they run 24 hours a day.  I also have a portable air conditioner unit for the room. With both of them, my tanks, dog, and I can enjoy a nice cool room!

Feeding and Maintenance:

I feed the tank everyday with brine shrimp, but sometimes I change it to mysis or blood worms  The anemones are fed once a week with silversides and DTs and Marine Snow are used for the clams and other corals.

I change about 40 gallons of water once a month.  I know this is too much for a reef tank, but I'm too lazy to change a small amount of water every week, and since my corals are used to it, it doesn't bother me.
I also change out the filter floss and and clean the skimmer collection cup once a month when I do a water change.

Tank Inhabitants:

Invertebrates:

cleaner shrimp, boxer shrimp, 2 peppermint shrimp, 25 turbo snails, 2 Emerald Crabs, sea star, 2 conches, green bubble tip anemone, green carpet anemone, red base anemone, and one I don't know the name of, crocea and maxima clams

Corals:

hammer, sponge, pineapple, suncoral, brain, cup, plate, flower pot, candycane, torch, fox, bubble, Elegance, Frogspawn, Pipe Organ, Scroll, Carnation, leather, green star poly;s, colt, mushroom, and some i don't know the name
