MARCH 2009

Fishytime's 110 Gallon Reef

Congratulations to Fishytime for being selected as Canreef's Featured Tank of the Month for March 2009. Thanks, Doug, for sharing your system details with us!

Introduction

I got my start keeping fish 20 years ago with a small 20g fresh water tank inherited from my uncle. Since then I have kept almost every kind of fish imaginable from gold fish to community fish to piranhas to cichlids. My hobby went from running one tank to, at one point, eight tanks filled mostly with what became my addiction of cichlids. That all changed when I went into a lfs about three years ago. In the store, they had a small 10g nano tank running, which opened my eyes to the possibility of salt water being done on a small scale. After much research, my start in the salty side was the same 20g tank from my uncle. I ran the tank low tech for a while with no skimmer, no sump, etc. and things went so well, that the snowball effect took over, and in the course of a year and a half, I shut down all my fresh water tanks and converted the largest tank into what is now my reef.

The Tank

The tank is 72 in long and 20 in tall and 18 in deep making it 110g (108 technically) with a 55g sump (with probably 30g of water in it). It has dual corner overflows with herbie style drains (one side feeds the skimmer and one side feeds the fuge). There are two 3/4" return lines, drilled through the back. The project has been entirely a DIY one from drilling the tank, doing the overflows, to building the sump (with the same 20g tank from my uncle as baffles). The aquascaping was done with a PVC substructure allowing for a more open appearing tank.

  • Euro-reef -- RS135 protein skimmer
  • 2 TLF reactors -- one with carbon and one with Rowaphos
  • Quietone 6000 return pump (700gph after head loss)

  • Tunze Osmolator Auto top off
  • 2 Tunze 6055s on multi controller (1500gph each)

I feed my fish with a combination of frozen Mysis and brine shrimp (soaked in selcon) and "Michika's Blend". The Tangs, Angel and Wrasses get three different colors of marine algaes. I also feed with other "treat" type foods such as arctic pods, live pods, banana and raw table shrimp.

Corals

I am not too familiar with all the scientific names, so I will post the ones I know and the rest are in the pictures. My tank is truly a mixed reef. Over 30 types of SPS including: A. loveli, A. Millipora (4 colors), A. tenuis, M. digitata (3 colors), M. confusa, M. danea ("Superman", "Ultraman", "Pokerstar"), and Seriatopora hystrix. My LPS collection is not quite as large. A huge Frogspawn is my centerpiece with a large Candycane and several different Acans and Favia tossed in for good measure. I have a serious weakness for Zoanthids. I have over 15 different species. Some of the other notable softies are: Orange and Green Tonga 'shrooms, Green Hairy Mushrooms, Super Mario Mushrooms, and several different Ricordia (both Yuma and Florida).

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank Canreef for this Tank of the Month honor and for providing me with the information and tools I needed to make my reef what it is today. I would like to also thank all the members of Canreef for sharing your wealth of knowledge, easing me through my passage to "The Dark Side".

A big thanks to Red Coral Aquarium (Kevin) for making me the #2 guy and allowing me to work off my addiction expenses to this hobby!! And thanks Uncle Alfred for that 20g tank.
